Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

This letter is to express my disappointment with your wifi services which I installed at my house a month ago.

Since day one, the wifi disconnects automatically while I am using it. Initially I thought it could be because of the electricity when the power fluctuates, after checking with the electrician I learned that it is the problem with the wifi system. I am an IT professional and works remotely from my home; this requires the continuous use of internet throughout the day.

I experience this problem at least twice a day. Moreover, it results into frustration, increases stress and doing the same task again from the beginning which takes a considerable amount of time. In addition, to cope with my project submission time, I often struggle to get enough sleep because I work till late night.

I would kindly request you to investigate the problem associated with the system or replace it entirely. I will greatly appreciate it and will write the positive reviews about the company once it is done.

I hope you take further steps to address this problem as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical problem with the wifi, explained the negative impact on your remote work as an IT professional, and provided a clear request for a solution (investigation or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening clearly states the purpose of the letter, perhaps by including a reference number or purchase date to make the complaint more specific and professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Since day one', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link your sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the problem description and the impact on your work is even smoother, perhaps by using a more sophisticated linking phrase to connect the technical failure to your professional consequences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and with some precision, such as 'fluctuates', 'remotely', and 'investigate'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'write the positive reviews' (should be 'write positive reviews') and 'results into frustration' (should be 'results in frustration'). While these errors do not impede communication, they slightly affect the natural flow of the language. To improve, try to incorporate more varied collocations related to customer service and technical support to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'works remotely' (should be 'work remotely' to agree with the subject 'I') and 'the problem with the wifi system' (should be 'a problem'). Additionally, 'results into' is a preposition error. Despite these slips, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional or passive constructions.
