Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about a problem with a piece of equipment that I use for my work at home. Unfortunately, my laptop has recently started experiencing some technical problems.
The laptop frequently freezes while I am working, and sometimes it switches off unexpectedly. As a result, I am unable to complete my work on time, and I have also lost some important files. I have tried restarting the laptop and checking the basic settings, but the problem still continues.
Since I work from home, I rely on this laptop every day to complete my tasks and communicate with my colleagues. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could arrange for someone to repair it as soon as possible. If the problem cannot be fixed, I would appreciate it if you could provide me with a replacement laptop temporarily.
I hope you will deal with this matter quickly, as it is seriously affecting my work. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Aesha Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your work, and provided a clear request for a repair or replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task, meeting all requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, and the transition between the problem description and the requested solution is smooth. You have used cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Since', and 'Therefore' effectively to link your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is characteristic of a high-level response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'experiencing some technical problems', 'switches off unexpectedly', and 'arrange for someone to repair it' are accurate and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band. However, there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The grammar is highly accurate throughout the letter. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional sentence 'If the problem cannot be fixed, I would appreciate it if you could provide me with a replacement laptop'. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant grammatical errors. The control over complex structures is consistent, and the writing is error-free, which demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence.
