Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Kapoor,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the HP company laptop, which I purchased from your store last year.

I have been using this laptop from the past few months on my daily basis for the office works, however, recently, I have been experiencing plenty of problems with this laptop. For example, laptop shuts down without any notification during business meetings, battery required frequent charging and storage system cannot able to save the important documents for a long time. Consequently, all these problems created inconvenience, makes me unable to rejoin the business meetings and send valuable documents to my manager. Over time, all difficulties create negative impacts on my productivity and damage my professional image.

It would be appreciated if you could send laptop repair technician in order to repair my laptop soon or provide me replacement facility and give me standard quality laptop as per the warranty policies.

I hope you consider my request and do something in this matter in order to overcome my problems. I look forward to your positive response.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues (shutting down, battery, storage), explain the impact on your professional work (missed meetings, inability to send documents), and state your desired outcome (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure you maintain consistency with the salutation; you began with 'Dear Sir or Madam' as instructed, but then addressed the letter to 'Mr Kapoor'. In a real exam, stick to the provided opening. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem to the impact and finally the solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'consequently', and 'for example' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the referencing between sentences is tighter. For instance, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact could be smoother to create a more natural flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inconvenience', 'productivity', and 'professional image'. There are some minor errors in collocation and word choice, such as 'on my daily basis' (should be 'on a daily basis') and 'provide me replacement facility' (which sounds slightly unnatural). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help elevate your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'battery required frequent charging' (should be 'the battery requires') and 'storage system cannot able to save' (should be 'is unable to save'). Additionally, there are some tense inconsistencies, such as 'I have been using this laptop from the past few months' (should be 'for the past few months'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading of basic verb forms and prepositions.
