Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you will find this letter in good health and high spirits. I am writing this letter in order to inform you that my laptop that was provided by your company is facing some technical issues.

My laptop's charging port is not working properly, which creates a problem in charging my laptop. Due to which I face many problems while working. Rather than focusing on my work, my whole focus remains on the laptop whether it is charging or not. Moreover, if sometimes battery of my laptop is low and I have a load of work, it becomes more difficult to work.

I would like to request a repair service of my laptop as soon as possible so that I can get rid of these problem and focus on my work more efficiently and effectively. I will be very thankful to you. I look forward to your reply.

Yours Faithfully,

Ranveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and requesting a resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the problem is brief, and the explanation of how it affects work could be more detailed to fully satisfy the 'well-developed' criteria for higher bands. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are covered clearly and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem, its impact, and the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Due to which' are used, although 'Due to which' is grammatically awkward in this context. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied and sophisticated linking words to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the situation clearly. There is some repetition of basic words like 'problem' and 'work'. While the student attempts to use some functional language, the range is somewhat limited and lacks the precision or 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of control. Phrases like 'in good health and high spirits' are a bit clichéd for a business letter. Improving the variety of verbs and adjectives would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my laptop that was provided' (which is slightly wordy), 'Due to which I face' (a sentence fragment), and 'if sometimes battery of my laptop is low' (missing articles). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student should focus on sentence boundary awareness and the correct use of articles and prepositions to improve accuracy.
