Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform about some problems with the laptop that I purchased from your store three weeks ago.

There are number of technical issues with the laptop that I have been experiencing. Firstly, it switches off frequently, even when the battery is fully charged. Secondly, some apps are not functioning properly on this device. Even I have tried troubleshooting these problems, However, it is not work at all.

These issues have caused considerable inconvenience to my work. Since I work from home, I require an efficient device to communicate with my clients, attend meetings and present my presentations virtually. Due to unexpected shutdowns, I have missed my deadlines and create interruptions while meetings. This has consequently affected my productivity and professional reputation.

I would really appreciate it if you could arrange for a repair or provide replacement device as soon as possible. I would also be grateful if could inform me about the next steps to resolve this matter.

Thank you for your support and consideration. I look forward to resolving this matter urgently.

Yours faithfully,

Harmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues with the laptop, explain the negative impact on your professional work, and state your desired outcome (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how the technical failures lead to missed deadlines and professional consequences. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts are balanced; the description of the problem is clear, and the request for action is direct and professional. The letter is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem to its impact and finally to the requested solution. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'consequently', and 'Due to' to link your ideas. However, there are minor issues with cohesion, such as the sentence 'Even I have tried troubleshooting these problems, However, it is not work at all.' The punctuation and transition here are slightly awkward. Improving the flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'considerable inconvenience', 'professional reputation', and 'technical issues' are appropriate for this context. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'it is not work at all' (should be 'it does not work') and 'provide replacement device' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms would help elevate the score. Overall, the language used is functional and clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'There are number of' should be 'There are a number of', and 'create interruptions while meetings' should be 'causing interruptions during meetings'. Additionally, the sentence 'Even I have tried troubleshooting these problems, However, it is not work at all' contains both a punctuation error and a verb form error. Despite these slips, the errors do not impede communication, and you show a good attempt at using complex sentences to explain cause and effect.
