Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear sir

I am writing to complain about a problem with a laptop that I purchased from your company last month. I use this equipment for my work at home, but unfortunately, it has recently started having problems.

The main issue is that the laptop suddenly switches off after about 20 minutes of use. Sometimes, it also becomes very slow and does not respond to my commands. I have tried restarting it several times, but the problem continues.

This is seriously affecting my work because I need the laptop to attend online meetings and complete my daily tasks. As a result, I am unable to finish my work on time, and I have already missed an important online meeting.

I would be grateful if you could repair the laptop as soon as possible. If the problem cannot be fixed, I would prefer a replacement with a new laptop. Please let me know when I can bring the equipment to your shop.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your professional responsibilities, and provided a clear request for a resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task, meeting the requirements for a Band 8 performance in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'The main issue is', 'As a result', and 'If the problem cannot be fixed' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The structure is professional and follows standard letter-writing conventions, making the text easy to read and follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use functional language correctly, such as 'purchased', 'respond to my commands', and 'grateful'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context well, it is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more advanced descriptive language regarding the technical faults. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your message clearly without any errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter displays a good command of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally sound. There are no significant grammatical errors that cause confusion. You successfully use conditional structures ('If the problem cannot be fixed...') and complex sentences to explain cause and effect. The writing is clear and accurate, reflecting a solid grasp of English grammar suitable for this type of correspondence.
