Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing to complain about a problem with a laptop that I recently purchased from your company for work at home.
For the past few days, the laptop has been causing a several problems. It becomes very slow after being used for short time and sometimes shuts down without any warning, In addition, the battery does not last for more than an hour, even when it is fully charged. I have already tired restarting the laptop and checking the settings, but the problem has not been resolved.
Unfortunately, these issues are seriously affecting my work. I need to attend online meetings, send emails and unexpected shutdowns often interrupt my work, and I have also missed some important deadlines because of these technical problems.
I would therefore appreciate it if you could arrange a repair or replacement as soon as possible. As the laptop is still under warranty, I would prefer to receive a replacement if the problem cannot be fixed quickly. please let me know what I need to do to return the faulty equipment.
I look forward to your prompt response and a suitable solution.
your faithfully,
Zainab Ahmad

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your professional responsibilities, and provided a clear request for a repair or replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a clear understanding of the expected format for a General Training Task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from the problem description to the impact and finally the requested solution. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct points. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Unfortunately', and 'I would therefore appreciate' to link your sentences and ideas smoothly. The flow is natural, and the structure of the letter follows standard conventions for formal correspondence, making it easy for the reader to follow your argument throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'prompt response', 'faulty equipment', and 'under warranty' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor slips, such as 'causing a several problems' (should be 'causing several problems') and 'tired' instead of 'tried'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or precise technical terminology related to the equipment issues.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'after being used for short time' (missing an article 'a') and the capitalization error in 'please let me know' (should be capitalized). Additionally, 'your faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully'. Despite these occasional slips, your control over grammar and punctuation is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured. The range of structures is sufficient to convey your points with precision.
