Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about a laptop" DEL-CORE I5" which I bought last month. Its battery is not supporting properly.
The main problem is that battery gets discharge suddenly, which has been causing inconvenience during work. Secondly, the laptop shuts down without showing a warning sign. As a result, I lost some of my important data twice in this week.
As, I am full time online employee, this problem is badly affecting my job . I could not attend some important meetings since the system got shut during a call.it is affecting my reputation and I am unable to complete my daily tasks.
I would like you to replace the charger with new one for free of cost as it is still under warranty .
Please arrange it as early as possible. Furthermore, tell me the exact time frame in which you provide me new charger .
I would appreciate for your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
ulya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and stating the desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the request to replace the charger is slightly disconnected from the initial description of the battery failing to hold a charge. To reach a higher band, ensure that the proposed solution logically follows the technical issue described. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Secondly', 'As a result', and 'Furthermore' helps the reader follow the flow of information. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the battery issue and the request for a new charger could be more smoothly integrated to improve the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the problem effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'battery is not supporting properly' (should be 'not holding a charge') and 'free of cost' (which is slightly redundant). The range is sufficient for a General Training task, but the use of more precise technical collocations would elevate the score. The spelling is generally accurate, and the language used is appropriate for a formal business letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'battery gets discharge' (should be 'discharges' or 'is discharged'), 'twice in this week' (should be 'this week'), and 'since the system got shut' (should be 'shut down'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing before periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve the accuracy.
