Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding a piece of equipment which I ordered on your website. I have faced an issue while using it.

I recently received the parcel when I opened the package the multimedia was not working. While connecting with the laptop there was an error displayed on the screen. The error was "no signal". There may be a technical error or some cables are missing.

Furthermore, It will be affecting on my work because I have an urgent meeting next week. Meanwhile, a training is being conducted for the staff and I have prepared presentation. Moreover, There will be seminar in couple of days. Therefore, I really need this device to work properly.

I request you to replace my order or send me the remaining components of the equipment as soon as possible. In addition, I require the latest version. However, if it is the limited edition then I would like to appeal to you a refund so that I can order it on another platform.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the problem with the equipment (the multimedia device showing a 'no signal' error), explained the impact on your work (upcoming meetings and presentations), and clearly stated your desired outcome (replacement or refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that the description of the problem is slightly more detailed; for instance, mentioning the specific model or the exact steps you took to troubleshoot would add depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the sequence of 'Furthermore', 'Meanwhile', and 'Moreover' in the second paragraph creates a somewhat rigid flow. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on a list of connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'components', and 'platform'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the multimedia was not working' (which is vague; 'multimedia device' or 'projector' would be better) and 'I would like to appeal to you a refund' (which is not a standard collocation; 'request a refund' is more natural). Expanding your range to include more precise technical or business-related terminology would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'It will be affecting on my work' (should be 'It will affect my work'), 'a training is being conducted' (should be 'training is being conducted'), and 'There will be seminar' (missing an article: 'a seminar'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, specifically with run-on sentences like 'I recently received the parcel when I opened the package...'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of your writing.
