Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I works for Agro internationals which is one of your clients. I am writing to express my concern regarding the issue I am facing with the keyboard which I received from you last week.
First of all, the keyboard is not stable on desk. Secondly, some of the numerical keys are not working properly. As I am a payroll clerk, my work involved a lot of writing, I have been downloaded a keyboard extension to type those numbers and this is very time consuming for me. If this problem continues, I would not able to meet my deadlines.
I request you to send me a new keyboard at your earliest convenience. I am expecting to get it via express shipping and please e-mail me return label, so I can return this keyboard via local courier.
Thank you for understanding my situation. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Davis wills

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the technical issues with the keyboard, explain the negative impact on your payroll duties, and state your requirements for a replacement and a return label. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the problem and the impact is slightly more detailed, perhaps by elaborating on the specific frustration caused by the numerical key failure in a professional context.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem description from the request for action. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'If this problem continues' to link your ideas. While the flow is clear, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences and paragraphs, which would help move the response toward a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. You use appropriate professional terms like 'payroll clerk', 'express shipping', and 'at your earliest convenience'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'I works' (subject-verb agreement) and 'I have been downloaded' (incorrect passive voice usage). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the 'less common' items that would demonstrate a more flexible or precise command of the language. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding basic errors will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'I works' instead of 'I work', 'my work involved' instead of 'my work involves', and 'I would not able' instead of 'I would not be able'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement, consistent verb tense usage, and ensuring that modal verbs are followed by the correct verb forms.
