Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I work for Agro Internationals which is one of your clients. I am writing to express my concern regarding the issue I am facing with the keyboard which I received from you last week.
First of all, the keyboard is not stable on desk. Secondly, some of the numerical keys are not working properly. As I am a payroll clerk, my work involves lot of writing, I have downloaded a keyboard extension to type those numbers and this is very time consuming for me. If this problem continues, I would not be able to meet my deadlines.
I request you to send me a new keyboard at your earliest convenience. I am expecting to get it via express shipping and please e-mail me a return label, so I can return this keyboard via local courier.
Thank you for understanding my situation. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Davis Wills

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Task Response | 7.5 |

| Lexical Resource | 6.5 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.5 |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues with the keyboard, explain the negative impact on your payroll duties, and state your requirements for a replacement and return process. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific nature of the 'numerical keys' issue or the urgency of your deadlines to further develop the ideas, but overall, the task is fully covered.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. You use clear paragraphing to separate the problem description, the impact, and the requested solution. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'If this problem continues' are used effectively to guide the reader. The flow is natural and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that referencing remains precise; for example, the transition between the keyboard issue and the payroll context is smooth, but could be slightly more refined by using more varied linking phrases rather than relying on simple sequence markers.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'express my concern', 'at your earliest convenience', and 'payroll clerk' correctly. The language is functional and appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the vocabulary is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, you should attempt to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items. For instance, instead of 'not stable', you could use 'wobbles' or 'is uneven', and instead of 'very time consuming', you might use 'highly inefficient' or 'hinders my productivity'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'not stable on desk' (missing an article: 'on the desk') and 'involves lot of writing' (missing a determiner: 'a lot of'). Additionally, 'I am expecting to get it' is slightly less formal than 'I would appreciate receiving it'. Despite these minor errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help elevate your score.
