Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I work for Agro Internationals which is one of your clients. I am writing to express my concern regarding the issue I am facing with the keyboard which I received from you last week.

First of all, the keyboard is not stable on the desk. Secondly, some of the numerical keys are not working properly. As I am a payroll clerk, my work involves a lot of writing, I have downloaded a keyboard extension to type those numbers and this is very time consuming for me. Therefore, if this problem continues, I will not be able to meet my deadlines.

I request you to send me a new keyboard at your earliest convenience. I am expecting to get it via express shipping and please e-mail me a return label, so I can return this keyboard via local courier.

Thank you for understanding my situation. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Davis Wills

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the keyboard, explained the negative impact on your payroll duties and deadlines, and provided a clear request for a replacement and return process. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific model of the keyboard or the purchase order number to make the request even more professional and realistic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition signals such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader through your points. The paragraphing is appropriate, separating the problem description from the proposed solution. The flow of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve further, ensure that the connection between sentences is varied; for instance, you could use more sophisticated cohesive devices instead of relying primarily on simple sequence markers.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'payroll clerk', 'express shipping', and 'at your earliest convenience' correctly. The language is natural and fits the context of a formal complaint. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or less common vocabulary related to office equipment or business correspondence, such as 'malfunctioning', 'rectify', or 'inconvenience caused'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the use of conditional structures ('if this problem continues, I will not be able...') is handled well. There are no major errors that impede communication. A few minor improvements could be made to sentence variety; for instance, you could combine some of the shorter sentences to create more complex, fluid thoughts. Overall, the control of punctuation and sentence structure is strong.
