Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention about the laptop I recently purchased from your company. Last month, I purchased the exquisite HP Pavilion Laptop from your website. However, after using it for just a month my web camera stopped working. It is also not allowing me to enable the camera in any meeting platforms.

When it malfunctioned last week, I thought it might be just an error. However, this week it has been worst. It disabled my camera while I was still in the meeting, and did not let me enable it again. As I work from home, it is most essential part of my work to share our camera during work meetings. Although I explained the issue to the work-team, it feels really unprofessional to not be able to share camera.

I was really frustrated at the company for providing me with the defective equipment. However, I have encountered this issue for the first time with your products. So, I would kindly request you to either refund me the full amount or exchange the product as soon as possible.

I am waiting for your response.

Yours faithfully,

PP

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical issue with the laptop camera, explained the negative impact on your professional work-from-home responsibilities, and provided a clear request for a refund or replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the laptop model or purchase date to make the complaint feel more authentic and professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Although', and 'So' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact on your work could be slightly more sophisticated. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'defective equipment' and 'bring your attention' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'it has been worst' (should be 'worse') and 'share our camera' (should be 'share my camera'). While you use some good descriptive language, incorporating a few more precise collocations related to technical support or customer service would elevate the lexical quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'bring your attention about' (should be 'to'), 'most essential part' (should be 'a most essential part' or 'the most essential part'), and the confusion between 'worst' and 'worse'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would help improve your score in this area.
