Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request a repair or replacement of a laptop that I purchased a month ago from your shop.

The laptop I had bought has been shutting down frequently by its own. Moreover, the battery drains quicker than usual, even it is fully charged. I have tried many things to fix the issue such as re-installing software and changed the charger of the laptop, but nothing has worked so far.

I work from home, and I use the laptop to prepare presentations for clients and attend virtual meetings with clients and my managers. However, I have missed important deadlines to complete the presentation since the laptop is shutting down repeatedly. Furthermore, It also affect my professional image as I couldn't attend meetings with my customers.

I would appreciate it if you could address the issue and arrange a repair or replacement since it is still under a 3-month warranty period. I would also be grateful if you could provide a substitute laptop until it has been repaired or replaced. Please let me know if I need to fill any complaint form.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours truly,

Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues with the laptop, explain the negative impact on your professional responsibilities, and state your desired outcome (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how the equipment failure affects your work deadlines and professional reputation. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor grammatical slips do not distract from the clarity of your request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Furthermore' to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'it is fully charged' could be more smoothly integrated into the sentence structure to enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'professional image', 'prompt response', and 'under a 3-month warranty period' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'shutting down... by its own' (should be 'on its own') and 'changed the charger' (could be 'replaced the charger'). While these do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The laptop I had bought has been shutting down... by its own' and 'It also affect my professional image' (should be 'affects'). Additionally, 'even it is fully charged' is missing a conjunction like 'though'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of conjunctions in complex sentences to ensure higher accuracy.
