Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this to inform you that last month on the 19th, I bought the Asus laptop of Series 7 from your company. it needs service as the screen got Black.
Yesterday during my office hours I was using my laptop somehow initially the screen got hanged thrice for 15 mins. Moving forward, then it worked for one hour continuously and then the screen got Whole black, I also restart it many times but it didn't work.
Laptop at my work is really necessary as I am the data analysis, it helps me to refresh and collect whole data in it and also assist me in statistics. If the laptop screen would not be replaced by tomorrow then i have to take a break from my work, which is not possible for me as I already took 2 request day offs this week.
I just want you to me give a favor with screen replacement or if a replacement will take more than a day please lend me a laptop on a temporary basis .So, that I can continue my work with it and I do not need to take break.
I hope you will understand my condition and help me to get out of this situation.
Thank you
Lily

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and stating the desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of how the problem affects work could be more professional, and the request for a temporary laptop is slightly informal in its phrasing. Despite these minor stylistic issues, the purpose of the letter is clear, and all requirements are fully addressed, meeting the criteria for a solid performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the purchase details to the technical issue, the impact, and finally the request. While the use of cohesive devices is present, it is somewhat mechanical (e.g., 'Moving forward', 'So, that'). The referencing is generally clear, though some sentence transitions could be smoother to achieve a more natural flow. Overall, the structure is effective and supports the reader's understanding.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the technical issue effectively. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'the screen got Black' and 'the screen got Whole black', which are non-standard collocations. The student uses some specific terminology like 'data analysis' and 'statistics', but the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise descriptive language and avoid repetitive or informal phrasing like 'give a favor'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am the data analysis' (should be 'data analyst'), 'I also restart it' (tense inconsistency), and 'me give a favor' (word order). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. The punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with sentence boundaries and capitalization. The student demonstrates a sufficient grasp of grammar to communicate, but more attention to verb tenses and word order is needed.
