Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam
I am writing you regarding the issue with the computer of your brand, which was provided to me by my company to do my work from home.
Actually, the computer that I am using from last few years has suddenly stopped working yesterday while I was finishing some of my work assignments. All of a sudden, the screen started glitching. Also, I was typing text, but the screen was not showing any input. Although, I tried to shut down and restart the device but my efforts did not work.
This problem has resulted in a lot of my time and work loss. I have stored a lot of my job's important files and documents in this computer which I am not able to access now. I need this computer to continue my job.
I kindly request the company to help me solve this massive problem by repairing my computer at the earliest. I would really appreciate if the company would pick up the defected device from my location and fix it. I would take responsibility for picking it up back.
Thanks in advance
Yours sincerely
Navneet

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues (glitching screen, lack of input), explain the impact on your work (loss of time, inability to access files), and state your requirements (repair and collection). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the computer model or the nature of the files to further develop the ideas, but the current response fully satisfies the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Also', and 'This problem has resulted in', which help link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is effective and the message is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'assignments', 'input', and 'responsibility'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you use 'defected device' instead of 'defective device' and 'picking it up back' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise terminology related to technical support would enhance your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For instance, 'the computer that I am using from last few years' should be 'have been using for the last few years'. Additionally, 'stopped working yesterday' is correct, but the tense usage in the first paragraph is slightly inconsistent. There are also minor punctuation issues, such as missing a comma after the salutation. The majority of your sentences are clear, but more attention to verb tenses and prepositions is needed for a higher score.
