Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir or madam

I hope this email finds you well

I am writing this email to express the technical issue I am facing these days . Mostly I work from home and since the wifi is not working It is causing me some serious challenges.

To begin with , I work as a Marketing manager remotely for an American multinational company . However, my working hours are always fluctuating depending upon the needs of the operations . Since last 2 days my internet connection is not stable .

Apart from this , the wifi connectivity is also not stable , it is not connecting to any of my other device as well as my mobile data is also not working as they are both with the same operator , Telus. Due to this network issue, I am not able to attend any meeting or submit any reports .

Moreover, if this will happen consicutively it will have negative impact on my employment .

Therefore, I will really appreciate if one of your team members could come and fix the internet issue at your earliest convenience or change the setup . Looking forward hearing from you soon .

Thank you

Yours truly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the technical problem with the internet connection, explained the negative impact on your work as a Marketing Manager, and stated a clear request for a technician or equipment replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that the connection between the equipment issue and the service provider is more clearly articulated, as you initially mention a 'piece of equipment' but then focus heavily on the internet service provider's network stability. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'Apart from this', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. However, some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact on your work could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the mention of the equipment and the specific network issues could be better integrated to ensure a more cohesive narrative throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuating', 'multinational', and 'at your earliest convenience'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'consicutively' (consecutively), and some word choice issues, such as 'express the technical issue' (which should be 'report' or 'describe'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Expanding your use of collocations related to technical support would enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Since last 2 days my internet connection is not stable' and 'if this will happen consecutively it will have negative impact'. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the' negative impact), subject-verb agreement issues, and punctuation errors (e.g., spaces before commas). The use of the future tense in the conditional sentence ('if this will happen') is also slightly inaccurate; 'if this happens' would be more natural. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
