Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing regarding an issue of my router that I bought few days ago from your store located at downtown. Having some issue on using the router is the reason behind writing today. Even though I am having the fastest internet connection in the town, the router is unable to provide me the desired speed that I was supposed to get. Moreover the equipment is taking restart all of a sudden by its own which is really irritating when I am doing any task on my computer. These problem is giving me some serious trouble in terms of my employment. As I mostly use internet to complete task for the company I work for. Furthermore, during video meetings I missed important topics only because the router took restart the internet dropped. Even though I got this issue a few earlier I am writing today on my earliest convenience. As in these past few days I have tried to reconnect the internet cable few times and tried other basic reboot steps. As far as of now nothing really worked and I am getting these issues in a regular basis. To solve these issues immediately please send a technician as soon as possible. On the other hand if I need to take any other step such as bringing the router to your service point or something else, please let me know.

Thank you for your attention to the matter. I hope to hear back from you. Have a good day.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the problem is described, the impact on work is explained, and a clear request for action is made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive, particularly regarding the router restarting. While the task is fully covered, the response could be improved by providing more specific details about the router model or the duration of the issue to add depth. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the problem from the request for action. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'As far as of now' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or unnatural. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the troubleshooting steps and the request for a technician could be more tightly integrated to improve the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate the issue clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'taking restart all of a sudden by its own' and 'getting these issues in a regular basis'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. The use of 'downtown' and 'at my earliest convenience' shows an attempt to use appropriate register, but the overall lexical control is limited by these occasional awkward collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'issue of my router' (instead of 'with'), 'bought few days ago' (missing article), and 'These problem' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'the router took restart' is grammatically incorrect. While these errors are frequent, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the situation. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over articles, subject-verb agreement, and more accurate verb phrases when describing technical issues.
