Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing regarding an equipment supplied by your shop which is not functioning properly and is causing a great difficultly in my daily work.
The problem is with the keyboard supplied along with the computer which I purchased from your shop last month. Some keys of that keyboard do not function properly while typing, and consequently, results in error in my typing.
As I work from home for a reputable company, I need to write a lot of consequential emails every day to my acquantainces, and having this typing issue is negatively impacting my work productivity.
I would request you to kindly replace the defective keyboard on urgent basis and arrange the delivery of a new keyborad to my home address. I have attached the receipt along with this email.
Your attention to this matter is of dire importance, and I look forward to your prompt reply acknowledging this matter.
Kind regards,
Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the problem with the keyboard, explain the negative impact on your professional productivity, and state a clear request for a replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the impact and finally the requested solution. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'as I work', and 'in addition' (implied through structure), which help the reader follow your argument easily. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your request, making the letter easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'functioning properly', 'reputable company', and 'dire importance' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'great difficultly' (should be 'great difficulty') and 'consequential emails' (which is slightly misused in this context; 'important' or 'professional' would be more natural). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task and allows for precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free and easy to follow. There are a few minor errors, such as 'an equipment' (equipment is uncountable, so 'a piece of equipment' is correct) and 'on urgent basis' (which should be 'on an urgent basis'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout. The errors present are non-systematic and do not impede the reader's understanding of your request.
