Student answer (Band 7.5)

I am writing regarding an equipment supplied by your shop which is not functioning properly and is causing a great difficulty in my daily work.

The problem is with the keyboard supplied along with the computer which I purchased from your shop last month. Some keys of that keyboard do not function properly while typing, and consequently, result in errors in my typing.

As I work from home for a reputable company, I need to write a lot of consequential professional emails every day to my acquaintances, and having this typing issue is negatively impacting my work productivity.

I would request you to kindly replace the defective keyboard on an urgent basis and arrange the delivery of a new keyboard to my home address. I have attached the receipt along with this email.

Your attention to this matter is of dire importance, and I look forward to your prompt reply acknowledging this matter.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the faulty keyboard, explain the negative impact on your professional email correspondence, and state a clear request for a replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader. You have followed the required opening and provided all necessary information to resolve the issue effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem description to the impact and finally the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'as', and 'and' are used effectively to link sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'functioning properly', 'reputable company', and 'prompt reply'. There is a minor collocation error in the first sentence where you used 'an equipment' (equipment is an uncountable noun). However, this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally precise and fits the task well, showing a good level of control over formal register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free and demonstrate good control over grammar and punctuation. There is a minor article error in the first sentence ('an equipment'), and the phrase 'dire importance' is slightly unnatural in this context, though grammatically correct. Overall, the writing is accurate, and the minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of your message.
