Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

I am writing regarding the equipment supplied by your shop which is not functioning properly and is causing great difficulty in my daily work.

The problem is with the keyboard supplied along with the computer which I purchased from your shop last month. Some keys of that keyboard do not function properly while typing, and consequently, result in errors in my typing.

As I work from home for a reputable company, I need to write a lot of consequential professional emails every day to my acquaintances, and having this typing issue is negatively impacting my work productivity.

I would request you to kindly replace the defective keyboard on an urgent basis and arrange the delivery of a new keyboard to my home address. I have attached the receipt along with this email.

Your attention to this matter is of dire importance, and I look forward to your prompt reply acknowledging this matter.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the problem with the keyboard, explained the negative impact on your professional work, and provided a clear request for a replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is immediately clear to the reader. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the nature of the keyboard malfunction (e.g., 'the space bar and the letter E are unresponsive') to make the complaint even more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the impact and finally the requested solution. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'as', and 'and' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is effective and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow is smooth and the reader can easily follow your argument without any confusion. The structure is professional and well-suited to the task requirements.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'functioning properly', 'reputable company', and 'urgent basis' are used correctly and fit the formal context well. There is some repetition of the word 'keyboard' and 'supplied', which could be improved by using synonyms or pronouns. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. Overall, the language is accurate and appropriate for the intended purpose.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'As I work from home for a reputable company, I need to write a lot of consequential professional emails...' shows good control of complex sentence construction. There are no major errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
