Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Madam,
I am writing this to you regarding because I have a problem with the printer that I bought from your shop two months ago. I use this printer everyday while working from home so it is very important for my job.
The main problem is that the printer frequently stop working and shows an error message. Sometimes, it prints only half of the document, while other time it does not print anything. I tried restarting the printer and checking the connection, but the problem is still continue.
This issue is affecting my work because I need to print important documents for my clients. As a result, I have missed some deadlines and waste a lot of time trying to fix the equipment. I am also unable to complete my work efficiently.
I would appreciate it if you could arrange a technician to inspect and repair the printer as soon as possible. If the problem cannot be fixed, I want you to replace it with a new one.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request. I would appreciate if you could help me with this problem. I am looking forward for your response.
Yours faithfully,
Namita

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Lexical Resource | 6.5 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.0 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the printer's technical issues, explain the negative impact on your professional deadlines, and state a clear request for a technician or a replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt, ensuring the reader understands the situation immediately. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about the error messages or the nature of the documents you are unable to print, which would further enhance the clarity and professional tone of the correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'As a result' and 'If the problem cannot be fixed' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is effective and contributes to the overall coherence. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are more varied; currently, some sentences feel slightly disconnected. Using a wider range of linking words or phrases would help the flow feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'deadlines', 'efficiently', and 'inspect'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing. For instance, you use 'problem' multiple times, which limits the lexical variety. Additionally, 'everyday' is used as an adjective here, but it should be the adverbial phrase 'every day'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise synonyms or collocations related to technical equipment would elevate the lexical quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that prevent a higher score. For example, 'the printer frequently stop working' should be 'stops', and 'the problem is still continue' is incorrect; it should be 'the problem continues' or 'is still continuing'. You also have a minor error in 'I am looking forward for your response', which should be 'looking forward to'. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are generally sound and do not impede communication.
