Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to complain about the piece of equipment which I purchased from your online shop last year.
I have been using an HP company laptop for the last year and I use it on my daily basis for my office work. However, recently I encountered plenty of problems with it. For example, the battery of laptop is unable to hold a charging for a long time, sometimes without any notification; it shuts down during important meetings and internal system addresses issue with storage apps. As a result, all these difficulties make me unable to take part in a business meetings again and complete my important projects on time, which ultimately makes me frustrated and less productive.
Due to a number of problems in the laptop, I cannot meet the deadline of my tasks, gain the details about ongoing project work from my colleagues and save confidential documents. Therefore, it preventing me from achieving my targets and reducing my overall growth and promotion chances. Also, this poor performance negatively effect on my professional reputation in the office.
Actually my laptop is still under warranty, so I will appreciate it if you could send qualified technician for repairing purpose soon or replace this laptop with standard quality and fresh piece laptop as per the customer policies of your company.
I hope you consider my request and help me in this matter in order to overcome my problems soon. I look forward to your prompt response.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Twinkle

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.0 |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your professional responsibilities and deadlines, and provided a clear request for a repair or replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the specific technical problems and the resulting professional consequences is even more tightly integrated to avoid slight repetition in the second and third paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences within paragraphs is smoother, as some sentences feel like a list of points rather than a cohesive narrative.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'confidential documents', 'professional reputation', and 'prompt response' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'internal system addresses issue' (should be 'has issues') and 'fresh piece laptop' (which is slightly unnatural). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding redundant phrasing will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'on my daily basis' (should be 'on a daily basis'), 'take part in a business meetings' (should be 'take part in business meetings'), and 'negatively effect on' (should be 'negatively affects'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion or impede the reader's understanding. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout the text.
