Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the laptop that I recently purchased from your store.
Firstly, I purchased it with great enthusiasm but after few days it started problems. Not only has it faulty screen, but also has problem in charging port. Whenever I tried to plug in charge, the screen will automatically turned black. Moreover, charging port jack is also lose which create another problems as well.
Although I had completed some small projects, I am not able to complete my further projects while using this laptop, because most of my projects related to I T, so it need to awake all the time. So I can complete those tasks with blinking screen.
I would be grateful if you could look into this matter. Please arrange a replacement for this device, if the replacement is unavailable then please refund a full amount of the laptop.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Vishal Goyal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task: describing the problem, explaining the impact on work, and stating the desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how the problem affects work is slightly repetitive and lacks specific detail regarding the nature of the IT projects. While the purpose is clear and the requirements are met, the response would benefit from more precise descriptions of the technical issues to better justify the request for a replacement or refund.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem description from the impact and the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Although' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors that make some sentences harder to follow, such as the final sentence in the second paragraph. Overall, the structure is functional and supports the reader's understanding.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey the necessary information. There are some attempts at using specific terminology like 'dissatisfaction' and 'replacement', but there are also noticeable errors in word choice and collocation. For example, 'it started problems' should be 'it started to have problems', and 'charging port jack is also lose' should be 'loose'. The repetition of the word 'projects' and 'laptop' suggests a limited range of vocabulary. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and avoid basic errors in word form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles ('after few days'), incorrect verb forms ('it started problems'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('most of my projects... it need to awake'). The use of 'Not only... but also' is a good attempt at a complex structure, but it is marred by the missing subject in the second clause. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band score.
