Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding a problem has occured in the printer that I bought from your shop yesterday.
I started a work to do at my home in the evening after buying the printer from your store. When I blug it and tried to print my work and assignments, it did not work. Even though you can see the light is green, however it could not print any paper.
It was frustrating and annoying problem, because I was in need to do and finish my work before the deadline. I have urgent and significant tasks to print them and give them to my employer after two days from now.
I would appreciated if you take this problem into consideration and suggest me any solution, such as trying to fix the printer, change it with a new one, or just refund my money back.
Kind regards,
Samah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the problem with the printer, explain the impact on your work deadlines, and state your desired outcomes (repair, replacement, or refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To improve, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more detailed; for example, you could briefly mention the specific model of the printer or the nature of the assignments to add more context. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the problem, the impact, and the request. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For instance, the sentence 'Even though you can see the light is green, however it could not print' contains redundant conjunctions ('Even though' and 'however'). Improving the flow between sentences by using a wider variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'deadline', 'employer', and 'significant tasks'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'blug it' (likely a typo for 'plugged it in') and 'change it with a new one' (a more natural phrasing would be 'replace it with a new one'). Expanding your range of vocabulary to include more precise business-related collocations would help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a problem has occured in the printer' (should be 'with the printer'), 'I started a work to do' (should be 'I started some work'), and 'I would appreciated' (should be 'I would appreciate'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
