Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express dissatisfaction with the laptop I have purchased a few weeks ago from your shop and request for a repair or replacement. I work from home and use the laptop to carryout job duties such as preparing presentations and attending virtual meetings.
Over the past few weeks, the laptop is repeatedly shutting down on its own, and the battery drains out more quickly, even it is fully charged. I have tried several troubleshoots such as reinstalling the software and trying different adapters to charge the laptop, but nothing has worked so far.
Due to the issue, I have missed important deadlines of completing the presentation. Moreover, the laptops turned off on its own during important meetings with clients and the manager. As a result, it reduces my productivity at work and has affected my professional image.
I would appreciate it if you could arrange a repair or a replacement on the priority basis, since the laptop is under a 3-month warranty period. I would also grateful if you could provide a substitute laptop until the issue has resolved. Please let me know if you want me to fill out the complaint form or if any additional information or action required from me.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours truly,
Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your professional responsibilities, and stated your requirements for a repair or replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to ensure the reader understands the urgency of the situation. You have maintained a consistent and professional position throughout the letter, which is essential for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem description to the impact on work, and finally to the requested solution. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'since' effectively to link your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow. The flow of information is smooth, and the letter adheres well to the standard conventions of formal correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint, such as 'dissatisfaction', 'productivity', and 'professional image'. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'tried several troubleshoots' (should be 'troubleshooting steps') and 'on the priority basis' (should be 'as a priority'). However, these do not impede communication. You use functional language well, and your word choice is generally precise enough to convey your meaning clearly. Expanding your range of collocations would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'I have purchased a few weeks ago' (should be 'I purchased' or 'I have had for a few weeks') and 'the laptops turned off' (should be 'the laptop turned off'). Additionally, 'I would also grateful' is missing the verb 'be'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. Your control of punctuation and sentence structure is generally strong.
