Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about a problem with a laptop that i purchased from your company two months ago. I use this laptop to work from home, but recently it has started causing several problems.
the laptop becomes very slow when I open more than one program. sometimes , it suddenly switches off while i am working . in addition, the battery does not last very long, even after being fully charged.
these problems are seriously affecting my work . i often lose important work when the laptop switches off, and i am unable to complete my tasks on time. as a result, i have missed some deadlines and this is causing difficulties with my employer.
I would be grateful if you could repair the laptop or replace it with a new one . As the equipment is still under warranty, I would appreciate it if you could deal with this matter as soon as possible.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
your faithfully,
ramandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your work, and stated your desired resolution (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the nature of your work to further illustrate the urgency of the situation, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'in addition', 'as a result', and 'however' (implied through context) to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve further, ensure that your transitions between sentences are slightly more varied to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel, but the current structure is clear and effective.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'purchased', 'under warranty', and 'difficulties'. The language is functional and appropriate for the context of a complaint letter. However, the vocabulary is somewhat standard and lacks the 'less common' items that would elevate the score to a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or sophisticated synonyms for common verbs and adjectives. For example, instead of 'causing several problems', you could use 'experiencing persistent technical malfunctions'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several persistent errors in punctuation and capitalization, such as the failure to capitalize 'I' in several instances and the start of sentences like 'the laptop' and 'these problems'. Additionally, there is a minor error in the closing salutation ('your faithfully' should be 'yours faithfully'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical conventions will significantly improve your accuracy.
