Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

I hope this letter finds you well.

My name is Zinta. I am working with Amazon prime and I believe your company has contract with our employer for the equipment supply.

I am using Dell computer version 16, and I am facing challenges with the webcam of the system since past few days. In order to meet our targets, we are required to attend the group meetings on a daily basis, however due to the poor function of the webcam I am not able to present myself in our virtual presentations.

In addition, my work is getting affected due to this problem with the equipment, where I am not eligible to showcase my prepared speech and forthcoming targets for our team. I am writing this letter to request you to replace my webcam with the new digital camera, through which my system can be more functioned and useful.

Please let me know the estimate for replacing the camera and I hope my concern will be addressed in respective time frame.

Thanks,

Zinta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the webcam issue, explained how it hinders your daily virtual meetings and presentations, and clearly stated your request for a replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure you provide slightly more detail in the 'problem' section, such as specific error messages or symptoms, to make the request more convincing. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the problem description from the impact and the request. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition' and 'however' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between the problem and the impact is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'contract', 'virtual presentations', and 'respective time frame'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'system can be more functioned', which is not standard English. Additionally, 'since past few days' should be 'for the past few days'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am working with Amazon prime' (should be 'for'), 'your company has contract' (needs an article: 'a contract'), and 'I am not eligible to showcase' (where 'able' would be more natural than 'eligible'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the punctuation is generally correct. To improve, focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement in more complex sentences.
