Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction about a laptop I purchased form your website last month.
This product is Dell 15 laptop, Order ID #[redacted phone], which i bought on August 15th. Since the first week, it has had a serious issue. The laptop overheats within 20 minutes of switching on and shuts down automatically. Moreover, the battery does not charge beyond 60%.
AS I work form home as a customer data entry in Brampton, This problem is effecting my work seriously. I am unable to complete my shift and have already lost two days' pay. My manager has also issued me a warning.
I would appreciate it if you could replace this faulty product with a new one under warranty or provide a full refund. I have all the bills and warranty card with me and can bring the laptop to your store this weekend.
I look forward to a prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
S. B

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues (overheating and battery failure), explained the negative impact on your employment (lost pay and manager warnings), and stated your desired resolution (replacement or refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of your work to make the impact more vivid, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem description to the consequences and finally the proposed solution. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'This problem' to link sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to improve the flow between sentences, as the current structure is somewhat straightforward.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'automatically', and 'prompt response' are used correctly. There are a few minor errors, such as 'form' instead of 'from' and 'effecting' instead of 'affecting'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to consumer complaints, such as 'defective unit' or 'rectify the situation'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. Most sentences are clear and error-free. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'This product is Dell 15 laptop' (missing an article: 'a Dell 15 laptop') and the aforementioned confusion between 'effecting' and 'affecting'. Punctuation is generally good, though there is an unnecessary capital letter in 'AS I work form home'. Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader.
