Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the technical issue with the laptop which I bought from your company three months ago.

The major problem I am facing is that it has become very slow and usually takes much time to get started which effect my precious time. Another problem is the virus which I found and it is directly effecting the functioning.

I am working as an Assistant Manager at a Five Guys Restaurant and I have many responsibilities which include writing emails, attending some important meetings , making schedule and many more . Therefore, it is very arduous to manage everything due to slow functioning of a laptop.

I would like to request you to please either change the laptop with a new one as it comes with guarantee for 2 years or give me a full refund which I will use to buy a new one. Please solve my problem as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing a positive response from you.

Yours Sincerely,

Amritpal Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues (slowness and virus), explained the impact on your work as an Assistant Manager, and stated your desired resolution (replacement or refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To improve, you could provide slightly more specific details about the 'virus' or the 'technical issue' to make the complaint more persuasive, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem, the impact, and the request. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'Another problem is', which help the flow. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard formal structure that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'arduous', 'technical issue', and 'functioning'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'effect' instead of 'affect' (used twice) and 'making schedule' instead of 'creating schedules'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Focusing on collocations and ensuring the correct form of words (verb vs. noun) will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'takes much time' (should be 'takes a long time'), 'it comes with guarantee' (missing an article: 'a guarantee'), and the confusion between 'effect' and 'affect'. Punctuation is generally fine, though there are some spacing issues before commas. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would be beneficial.
