Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the problem, explaining the impact on your work, and stating what you want the company to do. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the laptop has a 'dull' screen and battery issues, providing more specific details or a clearer timeline of when these issues began would strengthen the response. Additionally, the request for action is slightly vague; specifying whether you want a repair, a replacement, or a refund would make your purpose clearer to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite basic and repetitive. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures and lack a variety of linking words to connect your ideas smoothly. For example, the transition between describing the problem and explaining its impact is abrupt. Using more sophisticated connectors such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'as a result' would improve the flow of your writing and help establish clearer relationships between your sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message, but it is limited and occasionally imprecise. Phrases like 'getting low easily' and 'getting shut down' are informal and lack the precision expected in a formal business letter. You also repeat the phrase 'working from home' multiple times, which makes the writing feel somewhat repetitive. To improve, try to use more specific terminology related to technical issues, such as 'malfunctioning,' 'defective,' or 'intermittent power failure.' Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you achieve a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors throughout the letter that occasionally distract the reader. You have issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'One of the major problem' (should be 'problems') and 'the laptop that i purchased' (the pronoun 'I' should always be capitalized). Additionally, sentence structure is often simplistic, with many short, choppy sentences. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often marred by errors, such as 'while any issue or if it needs to replaced.' Focusing on consistent capitalization and correct verb forms will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
