Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the equipment problem, explaining the impact on work, and stating the desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. While the problems are listed, the explanation of how they affect work could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the request for a refund or replacement is explicitly stated, ensuring the task requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as 'So, by those problems' and 'At last'. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved with more varied transition words. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall progression of ideas feels a bit repetitive in its structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but it is quite limited and repetitive. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'conciunses' (consequences) and 'but' instead of 'buy'. The student relies on basic phrasing like 'good service' and 'important task'. While the meaning is generally clear, there is a lack of precision and a limited range of vocabulary to describe technical issues or professional impacts. To improve, the student should focus on using more specific terminology related to office equipment and professional communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'I am writing this letter to complain you' (complain to you), 'it have some problems' (it has), and 'those effecting my work' (these are affecting). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are inconsistent. While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic verb tenses and sentence construction is necessary.
