Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to bring to your attention a recurring problem with the laptop supplied by your company, which I am using extensively for my remote job.
As the laptop was purchased six months ago, it initially worked without any problems. But over the last two weeks, it is malfunctioning. The laptop is being shut down without any warning, while I am using to it. Moreover, the battery no longer holds its charge, despite being fully charged.
As my work includes conductive online classes, virtual meetings and making documents, these problems affecting my responsibilities. On two occasions, I was unable to attend online meetings due to these problems.
I would therefore appreciate it if you could send a technician to inspect it carefully and repair it. The laptop is still covered by the warranty, I would expect any necessary repairs to be carried out free of cost. If the problem to be proved irreparable, replace the device rather than repair it.
I would be grateful for a prompt response and look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues with the laptop, explain the negative impact on your professional responsibilities, and state your expectations regarding repair or replacement. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'conductive online classes' (likely meaning 'conducting') to further develop the impact of the problem on your work. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As', and 'therefore' to link your ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places; for example, the connection between the battery issue and the impact on work could be more tightly integrated. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem, the impact, and the requested solution, which is essential for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recurring problem', 'malfunctioning', and 'irreparable'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'conductive' instead of 'conducting' and 'making documents' which is slightly informal. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated collocations or precise terminology that would characterize a higher band. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the tone remains consistently professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'it is malfunctioning' (should be 'it has been malfunctioning'), 'while I am using to it' (incorrect preposition and structure), and 'If the problem to be proved irreparable' (incorrect verb form). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of your message. To improve, focus on verb tenses and ensuring that complex sentence constructions are grammatically sound.
