Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this message finds you well. The purpose of my writing today is to inform you that the headset that I use for my work purposes is not performing effectively.
It is a Sony, version 5 headset, which was provided by your establishment about a year ago. It was working fine until the last week. Since then, the microphone that is attached to it, is not detecting my voice properly.
My manager and other team members have complained about inconvenience. Moreover, due to this glitch, one of our finding companies cancelled the meeting. This was so embarrassing for me.
I would appreciate it if your company could either replace the existing pair of headsets for me or have it repaired at your earliest convenience. I have all the bills and warranty documents that must be required. I completely understand that it is short notice, but I really need this matter to be sorted out as soon as possible.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Gurkirat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issue with the microphone, explain the negative impact on your professional meetings, and state your desired outcome (repair or replacement). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific nature of the 'glitch' or the model of the headset to further enhance the professional tone, but overall, the task is fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to its consequences and finally to the requested solution. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'due to this' effectively to link your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow is natural, and the reader can easily follow your argument. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which indicates a good level of control over the structure of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'performing effectively', 'at your earliest convenience', and 'consideration' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal business context. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is generally standard. To move into the higher bands, you could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic business terminology, such as 'malfunctioning', 'rectify the situation', or 'technical failure', to demonstrate a more flexible and nuanced command of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response shows a good command of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There is a minor error in the phrase 'the microphone that is attached to it, is not detecting', where the comma is unnecessary. Additionally, 'one of our finding companies' is slightly awkward; 'client companies' or 'partner companies' would be more accurate. Despite these minor slips, the grammatical control is strong, and the meaning is never obscured. The use of the passive voice and conditional structures is handled well.
