Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to let you know that the company device in my possession, have some technical issues.

I am currently working as a project manager in this organization. As a part of my job duties, two equipment were allotted to me, that is a laptop and a personal computer. I'm having trouble connecting laptop with PC. Additionally, the battery life has been exhausted resulting the device getting shut down within half an hour of unplugging it from charger.

I have several tasks and meeting aligned for today. Some of them could be postponed, but the google transformation session is quite important.

I would appreciate if you can fix the device on priority basis. If there are any issues, my manager can get an approval for another device. Additionally, kindly let me know if that's the case, I'll transfer all important documents to my drive.

I am looking forward to hear from you soon and hope this matter can be resolved promptly.

Yours Faithfully,

Neha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the problem is described, the impact on work is explained, and a request for action is made. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how the problem affects work is brief, and the request for action could be more specific regarding the desired outcome (e.g., repair vs. replacement). Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements of the prompt are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem, the impact, and the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'If there are any issues' are used to link ideas. However, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact on work is slightly abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the letter is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more formal language like 'allotted' and 'promptly'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'battery life has been exhausted' (usually 'drained' or 'depleted') and 'get an approval' (should be 'obtain approval'). While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the company device... have some technical issues') and pluralization errors ('two equipment were allotted'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing errors, such as 'resulting the device getting shut down' (should be 'resulting in the device shutting down'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication.
