Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to report a problem with my laptop that I have bought from your company.
I bought this laptop about six months ago, and it had been working perfectly until a few days ago. However, past few days I am facing several problems while using it. The laptop shut down unexpectedly even though all the software is up to date. In addition, the battery drains very quickly even after charging it for longer duration.
As I am working from home these problems are affecting my work in several ways. Firstly, the laptop shutdown in between y work, that caused me to lose my unsaved work and which has lead to delay in completing my task and miss the deadline. Apart from that, this issue affects me when I am attending important meeting with client or colleague, and I have to use my personal phone for that meeting.
Since this device is still in warranty period, I would like you to replace this product with same or an upgraded version. If replacement is not possible, I would like to take full refund of this device. Let me know if you need my purchase receipt or any additional information.
Thank you for considering my request. I am looking for prompt response from you.
Yours faithfully,
Axay Nayi

| Criterion | Band |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical issues (unexpected shutdowns and battery drainage), explain the impact on your professional life (lost work and meeting disruptions), and state your desired outcome (replacement or refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the problem and the impact is even more explicitly linked to the specific requirements of your job.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding request. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the description of the problem from its impact and the proposed solution. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Firstly,' and 'Apart from that' to guide the reader through your argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing is clear throughout, and the letter follows a standard formal structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'unexpectedly,' 'up to date,' and 'prompt response' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing, such as 'working perfectly' and 'working from home' in close proximity. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to technical equipment, such as 'malfunctioning' or 'defective hardware.' The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the variety and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that slightly impede the flow, such as 'I have bought' (should be 'I bought' as it refers to a specific time in the past), 'past few days I am facing' (should be 'over the past few days I have been facing'), and 'the laptop shutdown' (should be 'the laptop shuts down'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in between y work' (typo) and 'take full refund of this device' (should be 'receive a full refund for').
