Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Brown,

I hope you are doing well.I am writing this letter to inform you about the device which is not working at my workplace.

After going ,I found that the Air Fryer is not working properly. When I tried to do the switch on then I found no light is blinking from this and also its not giving heat .

It is affecting me a lot in my work because I had to make some special recipes that only needs Air Fryer . Even the snacks are also impossible without the equipment becuase the family needs oil free food. One major issue is to pack the lunch box of their children from the given menu from the school that needs Air Fryer too.

Therefore , I need the new piece of the equipment to avoid any complaints from the family. Otherwise, you can also send a mechanic but as soon as possible . As I earlier mentioned they need Lunch box for the kids.

I am looking forward for your response.

Yours Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: describing the problem, explaining the impact on your work, and stating your desired outcome. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the need for the air fryer for children's lunches. To improve, ensure that each paragraph adds new information rather than restating the same point. The opening salutation was inconsistent with the prompt's instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam', which is a minor oversight in following task instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the transition 'After going, I found...'. Some sentences are disjointed, and the flow between ideas could be smoother. For example, the connection between the problem and the request for a mechanic is abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'as a result') would improve the logical progression of your argument and help the reader navigate your points more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate the nature of the problem clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'device', 'mechanic', and 'equipment'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do the switch on' instead of 'turn it on' or 'switch it on', and 'pack the lunch box of their children' which sounds unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally distract the reader. Issues include missing articles ('the' before 'Air Fryer'), incorrect verb forms ('only needs' instead of 'only need'), and punctuation errors, such as spaces before commas and periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for basic punctuation rules—specifically ensuring there is no space before a comma or period—will significantly improve the professional appearance of your writing.
