Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the HP laptop which I purchased from your shop last year.

I have been using this laptop for the last few months in daily basis for my office work. I have been witnessed plenty of problems with laptop from past few weeks like it shouts down without any notification when I am attending the business meetings, battery is unable to hold the charge for a long time and internal storage systems makes me unable to save important documents. Therefore, the laptop cannot allows me to join the meetings again, as a result, I didn't get the information about ongoing project work and cannot complete my projects on a time. Consequently, it reduces my productivity and damage my professional image in front of staff and bosses.

I will appreciate it if you could send a qualified electrician for repair of the laptop. Or my laptop is under warranty, so could you provide me fresh and higher quality laptop soon. Please let me know about your electricians' in-person visit to my home, so I can schedule my time.

I hope you consider my request and help me to overcome my difficulties soon. I look forward to your prompt response in this matter.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind regards,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the technical issues with the laptop, explained the negative impact on your professional productivity, and stated your desired resolution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of complaint. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, while you mention the impact on your work, providing a more specific example of a missed deadline or a particular project failure would strengthen the response. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem description from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore,' 'as a result,' and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'disappointment,' 'productivity,' and 'consideration.' However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'shouts down' (should be 'shuts down'), 'on daily basis' (should be 'on a daily basis'), and 'been witnessed' (should be 'witnessed'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to technical equipment would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and auxiliary verbs, such as 'cannot allows me' (should be 'cannot allow me') and 'cannot complete my projects on a time' (should be 'on time'). Additionally, the phrase 'send a qualified electrician' is slightly inaccurate, as a computer technician would be more appropriate for a laptop repair. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message.
