Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the HP laptop which I purchased from your shop last year.

I have been using this laptop for the past ten months on a daily basis for my office work, but I have experienced several problems with this laptop. Such as, it shuts down without any notifications when I am attending business meetings, battery is unable to hold the charge for a long time and internal storage systems makes do not allow me to save important documents. As a result, I become unable to complete my office tasks on a time and gain the information about ongoing project work. Consequently, it reduces my productivity and work efficiency. Which ultimately damage my professional image among the staff and colleagues. Therefore, I feel more frustrated and stressful.

I would appreciate it if you could send qualified technician for repairing of laptop soon, so I can continue my office work. Otherwise, provide me new laptop because it is still under warranty.

I hope you consider my request and help me to overcome my difficulties within a short time. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Kind regards,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You successfully cover all three bullet points required by the task prompt. You describe the specific equipment problems clearly, explaining that the HP laptop shuts down unexpectedly, suffers from poor battery life, and has internal storage issues. You then explain how these issues affect your work by stating that they prevent you from completing tasks on time, reducing your productivity and damaging your professional image. Finally, you state what you want the company to do, requesting either a qualified technician for repairs or a brand new replacement laptop since the item is under warranty. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a formal complaint. The ideas are well-developed and fulfil all task requirements effectively, earning a solid Band 7.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You open with an appropriate salutation and statement of purpose, move smoothly into the details of the problem and its consequences, and conclude with your demands and polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your introduction, the main body detailing the issues and impacts, your requested solutions, and your closing remarks. You use cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Therefore', and 'Otherwise' to link your ideas, although there is a slight mechanical feel to how some sentences are joined. Referencing is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow your argument easily without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for this task with some flexibility and precision. You successfully use less common items and business-appropriate phrases such as 'express my disappointment', 'productivity and work efficiency', 'professional image', and 'under warranty'. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward phrasings, such as writing 'internal storage systems makes do not allow me' where the word 'makes' is redundant, and 'become unable to complete my office tasks on a time' instead of 'in time'. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is varied enough to convey your message clearly and naturally, fitting the Band 6.5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses such as 'I would appreciate it if you could...' and 'which I purchased from your shop last year'. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, sentence fragments occur when you write 'Such as, it shuts down without any notifications...', and there are prepositional and article inconsistencies like 'on a time', 'gain the information about ongoing project work', and 'send qualified technician'. You also have punctuation and phrasing issues in sentences like 'Which ultimately damage my professional image', where 'damage' should be plural to match the subject, or the relative clause should not start a new sentence. These errors do not impede communication but prevent a higher score.
