Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to report an issue with a laptop that I use for our office work. The laptop series number is [redacted phone].
Currently I am facing alot of problems with the laptop like, the battery does not last long for more than a 30 minutes, it gets shut off once in a day and the main problem is it gets black out in the middle of my online calls.
Working along with all this issues is so difficult for me because I have to attain online mettings, webinars and complete some projects. It is hard to deal when it gets black out and all my work is also ruined along with that, and I need to restart the laptop and startover the task which takes alot of time and affect my productivity of work.
I would like you to replace it with the new laptop because the current laptop is too old for the version I am working and some of the applications for my crucial mettings are also not support to that laptop.
I hope you understand my concern and solve it as early as you can.
Best Regards
Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student covers all bullet points required by the task prompt very well. First, the problem with the equipment is clearly described, including details such as the laptop series number '125692' and specific malfunctions like the battery lasting less than 30 minutes and the screen going black during online calls. Second, the impact on work is explained by mentioning the difficulty of attending online meetings, webinars, and completing projects, which ruins work and lowers productivity. Finally, the student clearly states what they want the company to do, requesting a replacement because the laptop is outdated. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and all parts of the prompt are fully addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical organizational structure, opening with a clear statement of purpose and ending with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the problem description, the impact on work, the requested action, and the closing. However, some cohesive devices are mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as using 'and' to link multiple clauses in long sentences like 'It is hard to deal when it gets black out and all my work is also ruined along with that, and I need to restart the laptop...'. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'solve it as early as you can' where 'it' technically refers to the concern rather than the laptop. Overall, the organization is clear, warranting a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating issues related to a faulty laptop with terms like 'productivity', 'battery', and 'applications'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as 'series number' instead of 'serial number', 'alot' instead of 'a lot', and 'mettings' instead of 'meetings'. Furthermore, phrases like 'are also not support to that laptop' indicate a lack of precision with word forms. While less common vocabulary is attempted, these errors and spelling mistakes place the lexical resource within the Band 5.5 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses beginning with 'because' and 'when'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues that disrupt the flow. Examples include missing articles ('with a new laptop' instead of 'with a new laptop' being mostly fine, but missing articles like 'affect my productivity' instead of 'affects'), preposition errors ('support to that laptop' instead of 'supported by'), and run-on sentences with comma splices, such as 'like, the battery does not last long...'. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, supporting a Band 5.5 for grammatical range and accuracy.
