Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about the Acer company's laptop that I have bought from you last month from one of your shop located at Khanna.

The laptop is so slow even though it has 1 terabyte harddisk and 16 gigabytes RAM. I remember that I asked you to insert antivirus in it but even after that I was expecting to have good speed but unfortunately it is not providing my even that much speed which helps me to run my task easily. Moreover, I specially changed my internet connect so that I can get a good speed but once I connected my laptop with it and try to download something it took so much that even a short video took couple of minutes.

I had been scolded many time by my seniors as I couldnot able t complete my work on time. The work that I should complete in an hour, get complete in two hours just because of its speed.

I would like to request to change this laptop as eariler as possible and send me new model so that I can perform my task on time.

I hope you will take quick action.

Yours sincerely,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the problem with the laptop is clearly described, noting issues with slow speed despite high specifications and problems with downloading. Second, the impact on work is explained by mentioning that tasks take twice as long and have resulted in scoldings from superiors. Third, a clear demand is made to replace the laptop with a new model as early as possible. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and all parts of the task are well-covered with relevant, developed ideas. Therefore, this response meets the criteria for Band 6.5, which is reported as a solid 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the description of the problem, the workplace impact, and the concluding demand. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Moreover' and 'even though', although some referencing is slightly clumsy, such as 'this laptop as eariler as possible'. While the logical progression is generally maintained throughout, occasional mechanical transitions and repetitive phrasing prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the organization is clear enough to earn a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace complaint, using terms like 'specifications', 'antivirus', and 'downloading'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'bought from you last month from one of your shop located' and 'providing my even that much speed'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'eariler' instead of 'earlier'. These lexical limitations and occasional errors place the response firmly at Band 6.0, as the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message clearly despite imperfections.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'even though it has 1 terabyte harddisk'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'couldnot able t complete', 'get complete in two hours', and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is generally basic. While these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally pause, they do not impede overall communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 5.5 descriptor criteria.
