Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with a printer that I have recently bought from your store. I would like to bring to your attention an issue regarding printing.
Last week, I visited your shop which is located in Patiala city, and took Epson brand printer. I was extremely disappointed by this printing device. The product failed to meet my expectations because when I connected it with my laptop. It was not printing the pages and taking out all blank pages with black spots.
It created so many unexpexted issues for me, as I was supposed to submit my project yesterday. However, due to this technical issues with the printer, I was unable to print out the final copy and complete the submission.
Please can your company replace this computer or repair it as soon as possible and deliver it on my address. I hope you will take immediate steps to rectify the situation. I trust the matter will be resolved promptly.
Yours sincerely,
Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly described the problem by stating that the printer is 'taking out all blank pages with black spots' and explained how this impacts your work by mentioning that you were unable to submit your project yesterday. Finally, you stated what you want the company to do by asking them to 'replace this computer or repair it as soon as possible'. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter, though you accidentally referred to the printer as a 'computer' in the final paragraph. Overall, the task is fully addressed with relevant and well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear logical organization with an appropriate opening and closing, and the information is divided into sensible paragraphs. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt: introduction and description, impact on work, and desired action. Cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'As a result' are used to connect ideas, although referencing is slightly faulty at the very end when you refer to the printer as a 'computer'. Overall, progression is clear and paragraphing is used effectively throughout the piece.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message with adequate flexibility and precision. Phrases like 'express my dissatisfaction', 'bring to your attention', and 'rectify the situation' are well-suited for a formal complaint letter. However, there are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as saying you 'took Epson brand printer' instead of 'purchased an Epson printer', and a minor spelling error in 'unexpexted'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You make use of a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to express...' and 'The product failed to meet my expectations because when I connected it with my laptop.' There is a grammatical error in that specific sentence fragment ('because when I connected it with my laptop. It was not printing...'), where a dependent clause is punctuated as a separate sentence. There is also a preposition error in 'deliver it on my address' instead of 'to my address'. However, the majority of your sentences are clear, and these errors do not impede communication.
