Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writting this letter to inform you about the probelms i have been recently facing from the laptop of your comany.

I have been using the model 12 windows laptop for almost 1 month. There are a lot bugs in the system, it's hard to get along with my work while having to face these bugs. My system get's hanged in between my work and only after i force resart it the problem solves. Been like this for the past 2 weeks. I have tried updating the software but it didn't solve the issue.

Because it get's stuck or slow during my work, the progress i made get's lost once i restart it. Because theren isn't anyother way to get it working again which i know of . It takes a lot of time and hardwork to get to a point where i could save my work data, but usually the system stops from responding to my comands and stop working and this force me to restart the laptop. While i loss all my work done untill that period .This frustates me and is starting to affect my mental health.

I would like to know about any permanant solutions for my problems or anything that i could do to prevent it from happening again. I would appreciate a technical support staff contacting me on your company's behave and helping me solve my problem. I could even send my laptop over to your headoffice maintance department if needed to .

I hope you take this matter seriously and find me solution a as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

JOHN

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. Firstly, the problem with the equipment is clearly described, noting that the laptop has bugs, freezes, and forces a restart. Secondly, the impact on work is explained, detailing how lost progress and unsaved data hinder daily tasks and affect mental health. Finally, the desired action is clearly stated, requesting a permanent solution, technical support, or even sending the laptop to the head office maintenance department. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter, and the purpose is clear from the opening sentence. The ideas are adequately developed and fulfill all requirements of General Training Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, each addressing a distinct aspect of the situation, such as describing the problem, explaining the consequences, and stating the requested action. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally hampered by awkward transitions and mechanical referencing, such as 'Because it get's stuck or slow during my work, the progress i made get's lost once i restart it. Because theren isn't anyother way to get it working again which i know of.' Cohesive devices are sometimes used repetitively or inaccurately. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but overall cohesion lacks the smooth flow expected at higher band levels.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are attempts at less common phrasing, such as 'technical support staff' and 'maintenance department', but these are offset by frequent spelling and word choice errors, including 'writting', 'probelms', 'comany', 'hanged', 'resart', 'comands', 'loss', and 'permanant'. While these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the complaint, they indicate a limited lexical control that restricts the score to a 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('I would appreciate a technical support staff contacting me...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent errors in punctuation and tense consistency, along with structural awkwardness like 'This frustates me and is starting to affect my mental health' and 'While i loss all my work done untill that period'. Capitalisation errors are also present throughout the text. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the grammar score from reaching a 6.0.
