Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

On 10th August 2026 I purchased a wireless mouse from your store. It is a Dell brand, black colour mouse and it cost me $49.99 and it was not on special.

From past few days, I am have a issue connecting it to my laptop which is of same brand. Sometimes it automatically disconnects itself and then reconnects after sometime. I tried to reset it by taking the help of user manual but I am still facing the same problem.

Firstly and the foremost, I am working remotely and I am habituated of using a mouse instead of laptop touch pad. My working speed is compromised because of this faulty mouse.

I am writing to demand a exchange or full refund for this mouse. Neither I want any coupons nor any store discounts. I hope you can assist me with this matter and if I do not hear back from you I will seek legal help.

Your sincerely,

Mohammed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate has fully addressed all parts of the task prompt. The letter clearly describes the problem with the wireless mouse (random disconnection issues), explains how it negatively affects remote work by compromising speed, and explicitly states the desired resolution (an exchange or full refund). The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and the ideas are logically extended and well-supported throughout, meeting all requirements for Task Achievement at a Band 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation with an appropriate progression of ideas from purchase details to the problem, its impact, and finally the demanded solution. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating each distinct theme into its own logical block. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly and the foremost' and referencing words are employed, though some phrasing feels slightly unnatural or mechanical. Overall, the message flows smoothly and the overall arrangement is coherent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common business and technical phrases such as 'wireless mouse', 'remotely', and 'faulty mouse'. However, there are some minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as 'From past few days, I am have a issue' (instead of 'For the past few days, I have been having an issue') and 'demand a exchange' (instead of 'an exchange'). Despite these slips, the meaning remains entirely clear, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating adequate grammatical control. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with articles and prepositions, such as 'From past few days, I am have a issue', 'laptop which is of same brand', and the sign-off 'Your sincerely' instead of 'Yours sincerely'. Furthermore, the threat of legal action in the final paragraph is slightly abrupt and grammatically clumsy. However, these errors do not impede communication, supporting a solid Band 6.0 score.
