Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my concern with a computer that I have received it from our company. In my computer, microphone has stopped working which is causing problem during a call.

I have been using this computer for two years and All of sudden, microphone stopped working during a call yesterday. As a result, I could not connect to any client. Currently, I am working remotely in sales department.

I need another laptop on urgent basis. Could you please arrange me another laptop which supports primavera and SAP softwares? It would be very beneficial because we have recently started to use these software to track the order.

Can you please arrange someone to pick up the deskop so our IT team can fix the problems at our office? I would also like you to provide me an temporary computer in order to run the operation. Please let me know if you need any further information about computer issues. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt successfully. You have described the specific equipment problem (the microphone stopped working), explained how it affects your work (you cannot connect to clients during sales calls), and stated what you want the company to do (arrange a temporary computer and have IT fix or pick up the desktop). The tone is appropriate for a formal business communication, and your ideas are clearly conveyed and relevant throughout. While some details regarding the software are slightly mixed up between a desktop and a laptop, the overall purpose and requirements of the letter are fully met. Therefore, this performance aligns well with Band 6.5 to 7.0 for Task Achievement, and a score of 6.5 is awarded as the ideas are sufficiently developed and addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, where each paragraph handles a specific part of the message. You use basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'As a result' and 'Currently'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or imprecise. For instance, in the final paragraph, you refer to 'the deskop' when earlier you mentioned a computer and a laptop, which creates a slight inconsistency in referencing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the letter logically, moving from the problem to the impact, and finally to the requested actions. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully convey your message about equipment failure. You attempt some less common and topic-specific vocabulary items such as 'remote', 'sales department', and 'softwares'. However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations. For example, 'on urgent basis' should be 'on an urgent basis' or 'urgently', and 'softwares' is technically uncountable, so it should just be 'software'. Furthermore, 'an temporary computer' contains an article error. Despite these occasional word-choice and grammatical-lexical slips, communication is never impeded, which comfortably places your lexical control at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your letter, such as 'I have been using this computer for two years and All of sudden, microphone stopped working...' and 'Could you please arrange me another laptop which supports primavera and SAP softwares?' However, there are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text. These include missing articles ('microphone has stopped working', 'in sales department', 'provide me an temporary computer'), pronoun/relative clause errors ('a computer that I have received it'), and capitalization issues ('All of sudden'). While these errors are noticeable and prevent a higher band, they do not impede communication, as your meaning remains clear throughout. This corresponds to a Band 6.0 score.
