Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I'm writing this letter in connection with laptop that I bought a couple of months ago from your shop. I'm facing an issue with front facing camera. The time i bought this device, it was working properly also i got a demo on it by your one of the staff member. I started facing this problem today in the morning. The moment i started my meeting, it started flashing and then turned into colored lights. It is not showing fully black screen but there are some red and green lines on it.
The main reason for writing this issues is that I'm a IT engineer and do work from home. So, it is necessary to have a working camera for my meetings with clients on daily basis.
In the end, I just wanted it to be replace by a new laptop because it still has one year exchange warranty with your written policy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three key bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the technical problem with the laptop camera flashing and showing red and green lines. You also explain how this negatively affects your work as a remote IT engineer who relies heavily on daily client meetings. Finally, you state your clear expectation that the shop should replace the device under the one-year exchange warranty. Your tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and your ideas are sufficiently extended and supported throughout the text. To reach a higher level, you could have provided slightly more detailed context regarding the inconvenience caused to your professional commitments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from stating the purpose of the letter, describing the issue, explaining the impact on work, and finally requesting a replacement. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct points, such as the problem description and the professional impact. However, the organization could be smoother by reducing repetitive phrasing and avoiding mechanical transitions like 'In the end, I just wanted'. Referencing is generally clear, but better control over cohesive devices would create a more seamless and natural flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating specific technical terms such as 'front facing camera' and 'IT engineer'. You make valid attempts to use less common expressions, such as 'in connection with' and 'exchange warranty'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'writing this issues' instead of 'writing about this issue', and awkward phrasing like 'The time i bought this device'. To improve your lexical score, focus on enhancing precision, reducing minor word-form errors, and using a wider variety of natural collocations suitable for professional correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and complex ideas, such as 'The moment i started my meeting, it started flashing...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors regarding punctuation, capitalization (such as lowercase 'i'), articles ('a IT engineer'), and tense consistency. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they persist throughout the response and limit your grammatical score. To achieve a higher band, pay closer attention to basic grammatical accuracy, article usage, and ensure rigorous proofreading for minor mechanical slips.
