Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hello Gada Electronics,
I hope you are doing great.
I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the product that I received through your firm. I received this laptop two weeks ago and it has an issue with the camera while using zoom app for video conference. When I sign in to the zoom meeting, the camera shut down after couple of seconds.
I am working on a really important task that is mandatory for me and my company’s growth. However, due to the camera issue, I am unable to get connected with my team and discuss my presentations.
I would like to request you to provide me a courtesy laptop till tomorrow evening and make an arrangements to repair my laptop at your own expense.
I would appreciate your prompt response.
Best Regards,
Simranjit Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully describing the equipment problem, explaining its impact on work, and stating what action is required from the company. However, the requirement regarding minimum length is NOT met, as the response contains only 138 words, falling short of the required 150-word minimum. While the ideas are relevant, some points lack full development; for instance, the explanation of how the problem affects work is somewhat brief and could be extended further to meet higher band requirements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, but the greeting and sign-off show minor inconsistencies with the required formal conventions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the greeting, introduction, problem description, impact, requested action, and sign-off into distinct sections. Cohesive devices such as 'When I sign in', 'However, due to the', and 'I would like to' are used effectively to guide the reader. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement maintains coherence, though transitions between paragraphs could occasionally be smoother to showcase higher-level organizational skills.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message without impeding communication. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'disappointment', 'mandatory', and 'prompt response', demonstrating an acceptable range for this level. However, there are some word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'make an arrangements' instead of 'make arrangements', and 'get connected with' instead of 'connect with'. These minor slips in word form and collocation prevent the response from achieving a higher band, reflecting a solid command of everyday vocabulary with occasional inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate clauses, such as 'When I sign in to the zoom meeting, the camera shut down after couple of seconds.' There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as tense inconsistency ('shut down' instead of 'shuts down') and missing articles ('a couple of seconds', 'make arrangements'). Crucially, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The sentence structures show variety, but frequent error-free complex sentences are not yet sustained consistently enough to reach a higher band.
