Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain regarding the Asus Hydo chair which I recently purchased from your store Best Buy Toronto Downtown store.

To begin with, I purchased the chair a week back and I found there is a missing hand rest piece of the right side. Moreover, there is another issue which is the wheels as they are suppose to be 8 but when I assembled the chair there were only 6 pieces.

Furthermore, I use the chair daily for my office work since I work from home and it is affecting my posture when I sit for work and I'm aunable to deliver the daily tasks because of the inconvenience.

I kindly request you to send out the missing pieces of the Asus chair or a full replacement of a new chair which includes all parts.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Vipul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt, earning a strong score for task achievement. You clearly describe the problems with the Asus Hydro chair, specifically mentioning the missing right hand rest and the incorrect number of wheels supplied. Furthermore, you explain how the issue negatively affects your work by causing posture problems when working from home and hindering your ability to complete daily tasks. Finally, you explicitly state what you want the company to do by requesting either the missing pieces or a full replacement. Your tone is appropriately formal and polite for a complaint letter, and your purpose is clear from the outset. To reach the highest band levels, you could provide even more detailed elaboration on how the discomfort specifically impacts your productivity or professional commitments, but overall, all required bullet points are thoroughly and effectively covered.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear and logical organization from start to finish, ensuring the reader can easily follow your points. You use an appropriate formal letter format with standard opening and closing conventions. Paragraphing is handled well, with each main point allocated to its own distinct paragraph, moving smoothly from the description of the problems to the impact on your work, and finally to your desired solution. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader through your arguments, showing a good control of logical progression. While some of these linking phrases are slightly mechanical, they successfully maintain the flow of the letter. For further improvement towards the highest band, you could aim for a more seamless and varied integration of cohesive devices rather than relying on sequential connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, using terms like 'complain', 'purchased', 'inconvenience', and 'replacement'. However, there are some noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent you from reaching a higher band. For instance, you misspelled 'Hydo' instead of Hydro and 'aunable' instead of unable, and you included a repetitive phrasing error by writing 'Best Buy Toronto Downtown store' right after 'store'. Additionally, phrases like 'a week back' are slightly informal for a formal complaint letter. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of precise, less common vocabulary and idiomatic expressions related to customer service, while carefully proofreading your work to eliminate spelling slips and awkward phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with generally good control over basic grammatical structures. You successfully construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'Furthermore, I use the chair daily for my office work since I work from home and it is affecting my posture...' However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses that keep your score at the present level. For example, there is a preposition error in your opening sentence ('complain regarding' instead of 'complain about'), an article omission ('on the right side'), and a tense agreement issue with 'wheels as they are suppose to be'. Punctuation could also be refined, as some sentences run on slightly without proper pauses. To move higher, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure meticulous accuracy in verb forms and prepositions.
