Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

This is regarding the issue that I have been facing with the headset that I received when I joined the company.

It's been 4 years I have been using this headset and from last few days my audio is not audible or clear to the audience. Initially, I used unplug it and try again and somehow it used to work. However, currently I am not even able to connect the headset to my work desk. Though I plug it to the system, audio still plays on the speaker mode and sytem is unable to detect the headset.

This issue significantly affected my quality of work as majority of my work demands constant calls with on shore team in the U.S. Additionally, I also require to be on call with line of business to understand the process and challenge them. Due to the broken headset I have been forced to handle all this via email or to take calls without headset which is not effecient.

I kindly request you to raise a equipment replacement ticket to obtain the new headset or create a ticket to repair the current headset. Kindly let me know if you need any additional details. Thank you!

Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully address all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the problem with the headset not connecting or playing audio through the speakers, explain how this affects your daily work with the US onshore team, and explicitly state what you want the company to do regarding a replacement or repair ticket. Your ideas are well-supported and relevant to a workplace scenario, demonstrating a clear tone throughout. To move towards higher levels, your explanation of how the issue impacts your work could include even more extended specific examples, and your request could be framed with a bit more precision regarding company IT procedures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows a clear logical organization with an appropriate formal greeting, body paragraphs dedicated to distinct points, and a professional sign-off. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'However', and 'Additionally' to transition between ideas and guide the reader smoothly through your narrative. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the problem, its impact, and the desired action. To achieve an even higher standard, you could ensure that referencing across sentences is slightly tighter, avoiding minor mechanical transitions and creating a more seamless flow from your personal issue to the operational impact.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace communication context, using appropriate terms like 'onshore team', 'line of business', and 'equipment replacement'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, though there are occasional word-choice and spelling slips, such as 'sytem' instead of system, 'effecient' instead of efficient, and using 'raise a equipment' rather than 'raise an equipment'. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in word forms and spelling. To reach the next level, incorporate more sophisticated lexical chunks and idiomatic professional phrasing with consistent accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'Though I plug it to the system...' and 'Due to the broken headset I have been forced to handle...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('raise a equipment' instead of 'raise an equipment'), incorrect prepositional usage ('from last few days' instead of 'for the past few days'), and tense usage ('It's been 4 years I have been using'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards a higher band, you should aim for a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and finer control over prepositions and time clauses.
