Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam Desai, and I recently bought a brand new laptop from your shop.
I am writing this letter to inform you about the difficulty I have been facing while operating it.
At the time of purchase, I informed you that I am buying this laptop for the purpose of my job, and I vividly remember explaining you that I do not want any problems after sales.
Initially, I did not face any difficulties, but after few weeks the laptop has stared giving me problems. I work as an accountant, and my main roal in the company is to manage daily accounting related tasks. Since I have been facing the problem operating the laptop, I have not been able to manage my job duties and responsibilities properly.
As I bought this laptop a month ago, as troubleshot I would reccomend to change this laptop and provide me a new if it follows in your company's guidelines. I also recall having a warrenty on the product for atleast six month.
I would appreciate every affort to be made to resolve this issue.
I will wait for a posotive response to solve this issue.
Thank you, and have a pleasant day.
Your sincerely,
Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly described the problem with the equipment, stating that it has started giving you issues after a few weeks. You also explained how this affects your work by mentioning that you are an accountant unable to manage your daily duties properly. Furthermore, you stated what you want the company to do by recommending a replacement and mentioning the warranty. The response fully satisfies the requirements of a Band 6, while also showing aspects of a higher band through the clear coverage of all three bullet points. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, such as the specific technical details of the laptop's malfunction, which prevents the response from reaching the highest bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established from the beginning. You have used paragraphing appropriately to separate your introduction, the description of the problem, the impact on your work, your requested solution, and the closing remarks. The progression of ideas is generally logical, moving from the purchase to the current issue and finally to the desired action. At times, the cohesion feels slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as in the transitions between paragraphs, which keeps the response at this band level. Referencing is mostly clear, though smoother linking devices would elevate the overall flow of the letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message to the reader. You make some attempts to use less common items, such as 'vividly remember' and 'troubleshot', though these show some inaccuracy in word form and choice. There are also a few noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'stared' instead of 'started', 'roal' instead of 'role', 'reccomend' instead of 'recommend', 'warrenty' instead of 'warranty', and 'posotive' instead of 'positive'. These lexical errors do not impede overall communication, placing your vocabulary firmly at this level, but greater precision and accurate spelling are required to achieve a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'At the time of purchase, I informed you that I am buying this laptop for the purpose of my job'. There are some grammatical errors and inappropriate punctuation or capitalization, including 'Dear sir' and 'Your sincerely' instead of 'Yours sincerely', as well as minor slip-ups in verb tenses like 'if it follows in your company's guidelines'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To move up to a higher band, you would need to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over prepositions and relative clauses.
